Achieving DX is not always an easy task.

To successfully transform a company and its operations, it’s not enough to just add digital technology. You need a clear strategy and vision, changes to the organization and its people, and improvements to data and systems.

What is DX?

DX stands for Digital Transformation.
The concept of DX was first proposed in 2004 by Professor Erik Stolterman of Umeå University, Sweden, as ‘the penetration of IT is changing people’s lives for the better in all aspects’.

In Japan, the Guidelines for Promoting Digital Transformation compiled by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in 2018 provide a clear definition for Japan.

he DX Promotion Guidelines define DX as the transformation of products, services, and business models, as well as changes to operations, organizations, processes, corporate culture, and climate. This is done to gain a competitive edge by meeting customer and societal needs, adapting to rapid business changes, and leveraging data and digital technologies.

This is defined as ‘the transformation of products, services and business models based on the needs of customers and society, as well as the transformation of operations themselves, organizations, processes and corporate culture and climate to establish competitive advantage’.

In a nutshell, it means ‘transforming business models through the use of digital technology and enhancing the competitiveness of the company so that it can survive well into the new digital age’.
