Autonomous driving definition

Autonomous Driving (AD) and Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS)are systems assisting the driver when operating a vehicle.

A majority of the road accidents are caused by human errors.
Advances driver assistance systems automate vehicle systems for safer driving by minimizing human errors and reducing road accidents.

In Japan, vehicles equipped with ADAS are positioned as “Safe driving support vehicles”.

In 2019, 40 countries including Japan agreed on making mandatory for new models to be equipped with automatic braking. Japan put it into effect in November 2021 for new domestic models. Even though it is part of the measure to prevent accidents caused by elderly, both public and private sectors promote their use for safe mobility

The main development axis is autonomous driving.
To this extent, the car manufacturers and IT companies are globally working on self-driving vehicles.

Automated driving definition

Level 0
The driver himself operates all main control systems (acceleration, steering, braking)

Level 1(driving support)
The systems performs either single acceleration, steering or braking in a supportive manner.
Ex: Collision damage reduction brake

Level 2(partially automated operation)
The system partially perform operations
Ex: Automatic driving on highway。Automatic overtaking if there is a slower vehicle. Automated highway diversions.

Level 3(conditional automatic operation)
The systems performs all operations but the driver is responsible when the system is at its funcional limits.

Level 4(highly automated vehicle)
The systems performs all operations under defined conditions.
Ex: Automated mobility services in limited area

Level 5(fully automated)

Autonomous automotive on the highway
Autonomous car detecting persons and objects

Self-driving

The automotive industry is in a once-in-a-century revolution era.

The automobiles concept is changing dramatically as technological innovation progresses in a new concept called “CASE- Connected, Autonomous, Shared & Services, and Electrification”.

The car of the future is expected to become part of the social system by connecting with all kinds of services. ALTEN Japan will provide total support to meet your challenges and needs.
